Biographical Summary
Lee DeHaan is a plant breeder who became a staff member of the Land Institute in September 2001 after spending two years as a Graduate Research Fellow with the organization. Raised on a farm in Minnesota, he combines practicality with an idealistic nature. His responsibilities are to develop perennial wheat and domesticate Illinois bundleflower. Lee earned a BA in plant science and biology at Dordt College, and his MS and PhD in agronomy, specializing in agroecology, University of Minnesota. He received two awards there: an Outstanding Graduate Student award from his department and a scholarship for meritorious graduate students from the Crop Science Society of America. His graduate research focused on development of new leguminous perennial crops.

Presentation Summary

World grain production, which provides the majority of human food, depends on plant species that are outdated and inherently unsustainable. Current research in plant genetics will soon make ecologically sound grain production possible. Come to learn about progress in this exciting new field.

The Land Institute

The Land Institute has worked for over 20 years on the problem of agriculture. Our purpose is to develop an agricultural system with the ecological stability of the prairie and a grain yield comparable to that from annual crops. We have researched, published in refereed scientific journals, given hundreds of public presentations here and abroad, and hosted countless intellectuals and scientists.
