Avoid saving to your desktop or anywhere else on your local machine. Preferably make backup versions of important documents, especially when several people are editing.

Large word documents can become easily corrupted, especially when large images, spreadsheets and other objects are embedded.

Sometimes, opening up the document in WordPad will help as well.

Q: How can I open a Word Perfect document in Microsoft Word?

A: You can open it from within Microsoft Word. See this link: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP052742911033.aspx

Q: When Word attempts to AutoSave, I get the following error: The disk is full or too many files are open.

    A:
The reason for this message is that the file that Word is attempting to save contains corrupt or invalid links. Use one of the following methods to work around this problem:

Method 1: Saving Your Word Document as Rich Text Format

Click on the File button, and select Save As.

Choose to save the file as a Rich Text Format (*.rtf) file.

Close, and then re-open the document. (You may need to choose to look for *.rtf files)

After doing this, you may save the document in word format (*.doc)

Method 2: Test for Invalid Object Links

In order to test your document for invalid links, it is recommended that you update the fields. In order to do this, Select All (ctrl+a, or on the edit menu, click select all), and then hit the F9 key.

Word should begin to update the fields.

If an error message appears, from the edit menu, select Undo Update Fields. Then, click on the object that caused the error message, and press ctrl+shift+F9 to unlink the object.

You may also opt to delete the faulty object.

Repeat this procedure until you get no more error messages when updating the fields.

Method 3: Copy and Paste the Text

With the document open, select all the text (ctrl+a or under the "Edit" menu, "Select All").

Copy the text (ctrl+c or under the "Edit" menu, select "Copy").

Open a new document, and Special Paste the text in (under the "Edit" menu, select "Special Paste").

    Choose unformatted text.

    Save the new document.
