Many additional faculty hold joint appointments between the Bren School and other UCSB departments, and every year the School recruits a group of extraordinary people from other universities and institutions to serve as guest faculty and lecturers. PERMANENT FACULTY POSITION

Assistant Professor: Corporate Environmental Management

The Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management (www.bren.ucsb.edu) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Corporate Environmental Management. Corporate Environmental Management is a specialization within the Master of Environmental Science and Management curriculum, as well as part of the PhD program at the Bren School. The position would begin July 1, 2009.

We are particularly interested in firms’ strategies that address environmental performance, regulation, and stakeholder interaction. Applicants will be expected to have a strong research agenda, to publish in leading peer-reviewed journals, and to be dedicated teachers. Other activities include outreach activities with the business community and participation in eco-entrepreneurship, a curriculum offered in collaboration with the Technology Management Program in the College of Engineering. All applicants must have a PhD by July 1, 2009. The Bren School is a graduate school providing rigorous multidisciplinary research and education in environmental science and management for masters and Ph.D. students. The faculty is drawn from the natural sciences, the social sciences, engineering, and management. Collaborative research and teaching across disciplines is valued and encouraged.

PERMANENT FACULTY POSITION

Assistant Professor: Ecotoxicology

The Bren School of Environmental Science & Management invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to start July 1, 2008. We seek a scientist in ecotoxicology whose work is clearly relevant to environmental policy or management. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or have completed all requirements for the degree by the appointment date.

The successful candidate will have interests in investigating the effects of chemical stressors on organisms in the context of ecological systems and in applying scientific research to issues of environmental management. We seek a person who has strong background and experience in using innovative methods in molecular biology, chemistry, and ecology to conduct empirical studies of interaction mechanisms between stressors and organisms. The ability to teach both advanced courses for Ph.D. students and courses on ecological effects of pollutants and ecological risk assessment for professional Master's-level students is desirable. The candidate will be expected to carry out an outstanding research program and to mentor Ph.D. and Masters students. Preference will be given to candidates whose existing or emerging research is complementary to existing areas of emphasis within the School, including corporate environmental management, ecological sustainability, environmental economics, governance for sustainable development, and sustainable management of water resources.

Assistant Professor: Empirical Environmental Policy & Management

The Bren School of Environmental Science & Management invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, to start July 1, 2009. Applicants should possess a PhD or have completed all requirements for the degree by the time of appointment. Candidates who are currently assistant professors are particularly encouraged to apply, although the initial appointment would be without tenure. A joint appointment with a disciplinary department is a possibility.

We seek a strong empiricist whose topical research focus is in environmental policy and management. The candidate’s disciplinary focus may be in economics, geography, business management, political science, or related disciplines, and the candidate is expected to make substantive research contributions in his or her discipline, with additional visibility in the business and policy community. The successful candidate will have excellent empirical skills and strong knowledge of statistical and related quantitative methods, and will bring insights and innovative approaches to the design of policy-relevant solutions for important environmental problems. In addition to contributing to the Bren School’s disciplinary strengths, it is desirable that the successful candidate contribute to one or more of the School’s topical foci in energy, climate, corporate management (all three are priority areas), water, international governance and development, conservation planning, pollution policy, and marine policy. Attractive methodological emphases may include program evaluation, statistics, operations research, consumer research, applied econometrics, political methodology, spatial statistics, empirical political economy, or empirical bioeconomics.

The Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management (www.bren.ucsb.edu) invites applications for a faculty position in Energy and Resource Productivity. The level of appointment is open; appointments at the Professor or Associate Professor level carry tenure in the University of California system.

The Bren School is a graduate school providing rigorous multidisciplinary training in environmental science and management to masters and Ph.D. students. The faculty is drawn from the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, and management. The School is expanding its research and teaching in the broad context of climate and energy policies and efficient resource management.

The successful candidate will have a research focus in energy and resource productivity – preferably with a background in engineering, systems design, or relevant natural sciences – and familiarity with interdisciplinary approaches. The research can include the analysis of energy or resource use in the production, distribution, storage, and delivery of goods and services, and in technologies and strategies for increasing output per unit of energy or resource input. The Bren School is interested in researchers who examine these issues and their implications for improving energy and resource productivity and environmental quality.

Publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, demonstrated mentorship of graduate students and superb teaching, an active research program, and a national and international reputation commensurate with appointment as a professor at the University of California are essential. The incumbent is expected to establish and maintain ties with UCSB’s School of Engineering and other relevant departments.
