Why can't I delete folders from my IMAP account that I deleted with WebMail or on my unix account.

Q: "I've lost all my mail and can't seem to find them anywhere!"

A: In the top left corner of Outlook, click on File, then Open, then Personal Folders file (*.pst)

A small search window should pop up; indicate the drive and path in which to locate your mailbox.pst file (H:\Mail if your network drive is mapped correctly). Select the
mailbox.pst file and click on the "Open" button.

That should open up your mailbox and all your stored emails...

Q: All that's under my IMAP drive is a Deleted Items folder!

A: The first solution to this is to quit outlook, and open up a web browser to www.webmail.bren.ucsb.edu. This should only really be used as a temporary solution.

The second solution is to go to the Tools menu in Outlook, select accounts, click Properties, click the Servers tab, and make sure that the mail server is set to IMAP, and not POP.

Should none of these work, please come and ask for assistance.

Q: "My e-mails are being sent out as 'FIRSTNAMEHERE LASTNAMEHERE'."

A: Open Outlook and go to Tools => Accounts. Double click on Bren School Internet Mail, and change the fields that are appropriate. Both servers (POP3 and SMTP) should be mail.bren.ucsb.edu.

Q: How do I set up automatic archiving?

A: There are two ways to accomplish this. The first is to set this up manually. To do so, bring up the File menu, and click Archive. This should bring up a wizard allowing you to either archive one of the folders in your inbox, or the entirety of your inbox. At this point you can also choose the location of the archiving. It is recommended that you choose the Mail folder on your home directory on Nintu.

The second method of archiving is to have outlook automatically archive items. To start this process, open the Tools menu, and choose Options. Choose the "Other" tab, and click on the AutoArchive button. You will then have to tell outlook how often you want to archive, and what location you wish to archive to. Again, it is recommended that you choose the Mail folder on your H: drive.

Q: How do I decrease the size of my mailbox (.pst file)?

A: To compress the size of your mail.pst file, in the file tree on the left side of outlook, right click the "Outlook Today" file, and choose Properties. This will pop up a wizard. In the wizard, click the Advanced button, and then click the Compress Now button.

Q: What is the BrenMail Contact List?

A: The BrenMail Contact list is a periodically updated list of Outlook contacts that contained information for all Bren students, staff, and faculty. You can download it here. Once you download the file, you must open Outlook, click File -> Open -> Personal Folders File(.pst) -> and select the bren-contacts.pst file. You may then continue to keep this contact list in a separate file or import them directly into your Outlook Mail Contacts by dragging them into your own personal folder's contact list. Just dont forget to close out the contacts box.

Q: Why can't I see the BrenMail's Contacts when I click the "To" button to add email addresses to a new email?

A: The BrenMail Contact folder must be flagged as an Address Book in order to see the addresses when you click "To" to add email addresses to an email.

In your "Folder List", right click the BrenMail's Contact folder and click "Properties"

If you do not have a "Folder List", go to "View" and click "Folder List" to view it.

Go to "Outlook Address Book"

Check the box "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book"

Now when you create a new email, you can add any address in the BrenMail's Contact List:

Click "To"

Change the Address Book you are currently looking in by using the drop-down list next to the field. (The default address book that Outlook will start in is "Contacts".) Switch this to BrenMail's Contacts to access those email addresses.

Q: Why can't I delete folders from my IMAP account that I deleted with WebMail or on my unix account.

A: Outlook still thinks there is a folder due to the folder cache it has. When you try to delete the folder is sends the request to the IMAP server which lives on a unix machine. The IMAP server does not find the folder so it generates an error and Outlook does nothing. You need to create an empty file in your mail directory in U:\mail that has the same name as the folder you are trying to delete. This is a file with no extension with no contents. You can do this on the unix side by issuing the command touch and the name of the folder you are trying to create. You can do this on the windows side by creating a new .txt file and then removing the .txt extension.

If all else fails send mail to request and we can help you out.
